That’s almost $200 per hour in legal fees alone.

But how did we get here? Well, according to a recent report by The Daily Caller’s Peter Schweizer, the government spent $6.1 million during the three months of 2015 for a single case involving the use of marijuana. And as of this week, the Federal Aviation Administration has spent $3.1 million for one particular airline pilot who was cited for flying too slowly in a restricted airspace. This is all happening at exactly the same time that Congress is considering spending $1.1 billion a year to improve the nation’s air travel system.

Schweizer explains that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has spent an astounding $5.2 million during the first three months of this year on its own legal defense fund, an account that was once administered by the Department of Justice. And according to Schweizer, that account has gone from spending $10 million to just over $20 million this year.

But what really gets me is the fact that this is the first time that I’ve heard that this particular government account has been used at all to pay for legal expenses. It’s not something I know much about but I know that when it comes to paying for these types of cases the FAA has been the biggest player in the whole matter. So it would have seemed logical that they would want to use that extra cash to help pay for their own legal defense fund.

What is the problem? Well, it’s a simple one. The FAA spends a lot of money. And so far this year they’ve spent almost $30 million on their own defense fund. That’s almost $600 per hour, an incredible figure. But there’s a catch.

They only spend money when there’s an incident in the United States, not overseas. So there’s a reason they’re spending a ton of money to keep an eye on the United States. They’ve got that much money at their disposal. So why would they waste it on legal fees when there are lots of other issues to be worried about?

It’s easy to think of this as legal fraud. But Schweizer’s research shows that’s not the case — at least not directly. And what actually is the case?

Let’s take a look. First things first — the facts.

The federal aviation law says that you have to be in the United States for the purpose of conducting a flight within its territorial boundaries. And so far this year the FAA has spent $15,934,000 on its own defense fund. That’s about $12.6 million per hour. I guess that meant the FAA had to spend $10 million per hour to keep an eye on the USA, or at least keep an eye on the American side of the border. (The FAA’s own website lists the country of origin for its defense fund.)

Now, I’m no lawyer. (I’m not sure anyone is.) However, the FAA has been the biggest player in the last couple years in paying for defense fund accounts. It’s not surprising to find a major defense fund account that’s used to cover legal fees.

For example:

This is the case where the US Air Force spent over $50,000,000 on its own defense fund account in October (2015). I don’t mean that I’m saying that was an accident.
